The wait is where the cost hides: the sender escalates, from a note to a nudge to a body beside the chair, and every step burns time and goodwill on both sides. Silence is never neutral in an office; the other person fills it with the worst reading. The fix is cheap: answer the first call with a date, even when the date is next week. A clear no travels better than an open loop.
